Overview
Nubeqa is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of adult men with nonmetastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (nmCRPC) and metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer (mCSPC), including those receiving combination treatment with docetaxel. To be eligible, a person must also be receiving ongoing hormone therapy with a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist or antagonist or have had a bilateral orchiectomy (surgical removal of both testicles). Nubeqa is also known by its drug name, darolutamide.

Nubeqa is an androgen receptor inhibitor. It works by blocking the effects of androgens (sex hormones like testosterone), which can promote the growth of prostate cancer cells.

How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that Nubeqa is taken orally (by mouth) as tablets, twice daily with food. If used in combination with docetaxel for mCSPC, the first cycle of docetaxel should begin within six weeks of starting Nubeqa. The drug must be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider.

Side effects
Common side effects of Nubeqa include increased levels of liver enzymes (AST and ALT), decreased neutrophils (white blood cell) count, increased bilirubin, fatigue, constipation, rash, decreased appetite, hemorrhage (bleeding), weight gain, and hypertension (high blood pressure). Common laboratory test abnormalities include anemia (low red blood cell count), hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), decreased lymphocytes, and hypocalcemia (low calcium levels).

Rare but serious side effects may include ischemic heart disease (reduced blood flow to the heart), which requires monitoring and possible discontinuation of the drug in severe cases, and seizures, which may require stopping the medication. The drug may also harm an unborn baby, so effective contraception is advised.
