Overview
Trelstar is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer. It is used as part of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) to lower testosterone levels, which helps slow the growth of prostate cancer cells. Trelstar is also known by its drug name, triptorelin pamoate.

Trelstar is a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist. It works by initially increasing and then significantly lowering the amount of testosterone produced in the body, helping to deprive prostate cancer cells of the hormone they need to grow.

How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that Trelstar is given as an intramuscular (into the muscle) injection in one of the buttocks. It is available in different dosing schedules, and the appropriate dosage strength is chosen based on how often the treatment is given. The drug should be given exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider.

Side effects
Common side effects of Trelstar include hot flushes, skeletal pain, erectile dysfunction, testicular atrophy, headache, edema (swelling) in the legs, and leg pain. Specific side effects can vary slightly depending on the dosing schedule.

Rare but serious side effects may include hypersensitivity reactions such as anaphylactic shock and angioedema (swelling under the skin), tumor flare (temporary worsening of prostate cancer symptoms), metabolic syndrome (increased risk of high blood sugar, cholesterol, and liver disease), cardiovascular events such as heart attack or stroke, convulsions (seizures), severe skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and QT interval prolongation (a heart rhythm disorder). Trelstar may also cause fetal harm and may impair fertility.
